>> live from the kgo broadcast center this, is abc7 news. >> good morning, everyone. thanks for joining us. i'm carolyn tyler. it appears this morning that a magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck off canada's pacific coast last night hasn't done any major damage. pacific tsunami warnings have been downgraded. the powerful undersea earthquake struck the queens island area last night. it was followed by a magnitude 5.8 a aftershock. it was felt in alaska's southeast communities, but most of the energy was sent to the southwest toward the hawaiian islands. the first tsunami waves to the islands were smaller than first

predicted. geologists say the largest wave so far was measured on maui at five feet. that's only about two feet higher than normal sea levels. since then all warnings and advisories have been cancelled and the evacuated coastal residents in honolulu have been allowed to return home. experts are still warning people on the islands, though, to stay away from the water's edge for several more hours. california was initially under a tsunami advisory, which was cancelled after waves in the pacific northwest were measured in just a few inches. this is one of those days to check with your airline if you are flying at sfo. four of today's flights have been affected by the tsunami situation. one arrival from maui was cancelled and one departure is delayed. one arrival from honolulu is delayed two to five hours and a departure for honolulu has also been delayed. hurricane sandy is also affecting flights from sfo this

morning. united airlines has cancelled 33 depart first. 33 for east coast destinations. virgin airlines has cancelled five flights. no flight cancellations out of oakland for san jose. massive flooding and power outages are predicted on the east coast. in new york city they are closing schools, even shutting down the subway system starting tonight. abc's randy hit is in kill level hills north carolina with the latest on hurricane sandy. >> normally i don't get that nervous, but not feeling that good about >> it will knock down trees and power lines. >> we should not underestimate the impact of this storm.

>> sandy is expected to run right into a cold front and that will super charge it. >> this could set historical precedence if it develops along the lines that the american models are indicating. >> that kind of power could launch four to ten foot storm surges in vulnerable areas of washington d.c., new jersey and new york. >> if it would strengthen unexpectedly or change its path it could do a lot of damage and you could be at risk. >> that's why families all along the east coast are boarding up, stocking up on food and water, generators and batteries and other supplies. >> prepare for the worst and hope for the best. >> bracing when sandy strikes. >> sandy is already reeking flush havoc on travel. flights have been cancelled. abc news, north carolina.

>> let's check in with lisa argen for the latest on hurricane sandy. >> good morning, everyone. as sandy intensifies, the storm expands and that's what we are look at right now. very heavy rain from maryland through north carolina. and a buoy off of north carolina indicated the wave height of over 30 feet. so we are looking at this storm coming together, kind of more offing and turning into more of a winter storm but it is still expected to be quite large and the tract between new york city and washington d.c. some of the potential impacts will be 40 to 75 mile-an-hour winds from boston, washington to pittsburgh with 4 to 8-foot storm surge, 5 to 10 inches of rain, and with the high tide definitely some beach erosion. we will watch that for you. back home with some hazy conditions and a little bit of a sea breeze now, temperatures will be a little cooler at our beaches, but overall once again

above the average, low 80s, and then we are going below average as we get into another wet weather maker come midweek. details on that a little bit later. carolyn. >> all right. thank you, lisa. the big story in the bay area, the giants just one win away from clinching their second world series in the past three seasons. tonight in detroit the giants have an opportunity to sweep the tigers and win the world series for the second time in three years. last night the giants' pitchers shut down the tigers to go up 3-0 in the series. they are the first team to do pitch consecutive shutouts sinces '66 baltimore orioles good it to bodgers. larry beil has the highlights coming up in sports in about 20 minutes. tonight's game is being played in detroit where the giants could wrap it all up. bay area giants fans can watch

on the jumbo tv screens outside city hall. we are joined live from civic center plaza. they have done this with the world cup soccer matches and now this. very popular. >> yes, carolyn, and very exciting. right behind me right any the jumbotron is being set up. game 4 will be shown as giants cheer on their giants' hope for a potential world series championship and a potential four-game sweep. let's take a look at video we have from just about an hour ago as the jumbotron was just arriving. a dozen or so stage hands began setting up this quarter million dollars screen 30 feet wide, 17 feet tall on a 40 by 40 stage. get this, apparently it costs anywhere from $5,000 to $10,000 a day to rent 24 stage and screen. and all across civic center plaza you can see giants fever, flags flying above city all haul.

take a look at this other video from about four hours ago. giants fan ronny was the first giants fan out here to snag the best seat in the house in front of city hall. he and his brother had been here since midnight. they are staying awake with the help of books, pizza, gatorade. he said standing here overnight and all day today is a ritual he and his brother started two years ago and they hope it works this year. >> for 2010 and it was good luck. we end up winning. we are diehard fans, we've been since little kids so we've come to do it again. >> well, they are likely not the only fans coming to do it again. we have video from two years ago when the giants' last world series win was broadcast right here in civic plaza. thousands celebrate the the world championship and an even larger crowd is expected to pack into today's game because the giants are up three games to none, of course. it's the added drama of this potentially being the final game of the world series, and it has

san francisco police preparing. >> if it does go originals we've taken steps to work with all the merchants around the ballpark and we've been fantastic. we want people to know, hey, don't drink and drive k that's on any weekend but be respect full of people, be respectful of other fans, be respectful of the police. we really want this to be a fun celebration when the giants bring this home. >> well, the celebration here in civic center plaidsa is an alcohol-free event. the mayor is encouraging giants fans to wear orange and black, display signs, flags, support their hometown team and the san francisco mayor ed lee and detroit's mayor, dave bing is encouraging people to leave their rivalries on the field. you can see they are still trying to get it up to the height where it will be for the viewing this afternoon.

>> new this morning in contra costa county, oakland police are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred just before 2:00 this morning. police responding to shots being fired. found a man who had been shot several times near the intersection of main street and hill avenue. he died at a local hospital. more details this morning about that nanny accused of killing two children in new york city. she has no criminal history but did recently seek psychiatric help. the children's mother found the two and six-year-old kids stabbed in the bathtub on

thursday. they were fully clothed. they died on the way to the hospital. the nanny had also stabbed herself several times. she is still alive, but investigators can't question her yet because of wounds to her neck. >> two teenagers were injured when they were hit by a car while walking along a sonoma street yesterday afternoon. the 14-year-old boys were in the crosswalk when they were struck by a 92-year-old man driving a car. one of the boys suffered a possible skull fracture. the other had minor cuts and bruises. sheriff's deputies say the man did not see the teens. speed and alcohol are not considered factors in that accident. 33 new fire department new recruits in san jose begin training tomorrow. it will be the largest numbers of recruits the city has ever trained at one time. the previous record, 30 set three years ago.

an $8.6 million grant provided by the federal emergency management agency is going to pay for the new firefighters. the recruits about bring the department back to 683 firefighters, just shy of what the department had four years ago. >> our meteorologist lisa argen is joining us now with a preview of her accuweather forecast. >> we have some fog out there. in fact, ocean beach is fogged in right now. everybody else enjoying a lot of sunshine. we're talking about two to five degrees of cooling coastside while we stay warmer than average today, but stay tuned because the second half of the week is look different. i'll explain coming up. >> thank you, leaguesa. also ahead, the punchers on the giants shutdown the tigers' offense again. now one win away from another championship parade. larry beil has the highlights coming up in sports.

>> this morning people on treasure island are being asked to boil their tap water until tomorrow. it's a precaution after a water main break friday night. crews had it plugged and returned toilet and hydrant water to the area early yesterday morning but the pipe still needs to be repaired. little league teams are being warned not to drink from mountains at any of the baseball fields on the island until the water is tested tomorrow just to make sure it's safe for drinking. so they will have to bring canisters or water bottles or something pause it's going to be a warm one out there today. >> pretty pleasant. it will get warm toward the east bay valleys, but otherwise we are average. not what you expect for the last gasp of nice autumn weather we are having. as you look outside, this is lake tahoe. temperatures now is 32 degrees. dropped to a low in the

mid-20s this afternoon. they have the freezing fog once again, and from vollmer peak it is nice and sunny. a ridge of high pressure continues to hold throughout the day today, bringing that mild air. in fact, we will look for this to weaken as soon as tonight. that's going to bring a return to some more typical weather. we want you to give a sense of how large these two systems are, how big this one storm will be. feeling the impact from hurricane sandy from north carolina all the way up to boston. so that's over 800 miles. so this thing is more offing into a second storm that keys one massive event that continues to impact over 50 million people with the possibility of 40 to 70-mile an hour winds through washington d.c., boston and pittsburgh, 4 to 8-foot storm surge, 5 to 10 inches of rain and the lunar high tide that

will create more beach erosion. so many things going on here, all expected by overnight tomorrow into tuesday. and locally we are looking at the clear conditions, but the low clouds and fog have come back to the shoreline and that will make an impact in the form of a light sea breeze throughout the day today. we are still expecting the mild temperatures coastside. but you are cooler than yesterday, 56 in oakland and down by monterey bay, upper 50s for you with a very nice afternoon ahead. so with this ridge of high pressure in place, our little rainmaker not only stays to the north now for the time being, but for the next couple days. we will be looking at the changes ahead. you will notice with 5 degrees of cooling at half moon bay and san francisco this morning,, you get the idea there's a couple change offshore. from day-to-day we will lose maybe two to four degrees starting tomorrow. but patchy coastal fog and the sunny and mild event this

afternoon. here's a look at that ridge of high pressure as it keeps the storm track to the north it will weak spend shift to the east. that happens tomorrow. that will allow for the cooling, the numbers to come out of the 80s and more like the 70s for monday and tuesday. today, then, 63 in the northern sierra with 75 in big sir and still mild early on but later the temperatures will begin to come down after 3:00. 73 in the city, 76 in oakland with 80s east around concord and livermore. 82 in gilroy. it's been chilly, another cold one tonight with breezy conditions. winds picking up to ten to 20 miles an hour in detroit with the cloudy skies. here's the accuweather seven-day forecast. coast will feel the sea breeze today and some fog. then by tomorrow upper 70s warmest locations. low 70s on tuesday, and then the rain favoring the north bay, maybe a half-inch or so by the afternoon to evening hours so i

think a lot of the trick-or-treaters will be okay. east bay, south bay, not experiencing any rain. so maybe just north of the golden gate. you have to watch the forecast as it changes. >> so if we had to have a game six back here on wednesday night? >> it would be kind of touch and go. it won't be a heavy downpour. the rain looking like it's kind of fizzling. >> all right. we don't think we are going to have to anyway. let's check out sports this afternoon. the raiders are in kansas city to play the rival chiefs, and tonight in detroit, as you know, the giants have an opportunity to sweep the tigers and win the world series for the second time in three years. last night the giants' pitchers shut down the tigers to go up 3-0 in the series. here's larry beil with the highlights in this morning's sports. >> good morning, everybody. the giants have taken a stranglehold on the tigers in the world series. the giants blanking the tigers again last night. that was game three. becoming the first team since the 1966 baltimore orioles to

>> live from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is abc7 news. >> welcome back, everyone. we are now just nine days away from election day. today republican presidential nominee mitt romney is in ohio joining up with his running mate, paul ryan, on that bus tour. yesterday romney campaigned in florida, telling supporters the president has failed to deliver on the promises he made during his first campaign. romney says he won't do that. he also said his tenure as president will include more cooperation across the isle. romney told the crowd now is not the time to demonize political

opponents. he wants to build bridges with democrats. and the men are off the campaign trail today. yesterday the president rallied a crowd in new hampshire. he hit mitt romney on his record as massachusetts gov. he said romney targeted the middle class with unnecessary fees and taxes. the president also says it will be hard for romney to accomplish all of the last-minute promises he is making right now. both president obama and mitt romney has cancelled campaign stops because of hurricane sandy. the romney campaign said a scheduled stop in the swing state of virginia will not happen today because of the growing threat from sandy. first lady michelle obama has cancelled an appearance in new hampshire on tuesday, and president obama is said to be going to fema headquarters today to get a briefing and begin monitoring storm conditions. local democratic and republican parties are ramping

up their efforts to make sure voters get to the polls. all over the bay area phone banks are up and calling people in both parties. abc7 news reporter thomas ramon has the story from oakland. >> she is a volunteer going door to door in this direct to make sure the voters know the issues and get out to vote. she's part of a few dozen men and women who volunteer to walk precincts for "oakland rising." she said this is important enough to do whatever she can do to help. if they see my face, they see my face and then i can get them out and tell them it's important, we need you. >> this election has local, as well as national issues that everyone should be concerned about, according to this woman, the executive director of oakland rising. >> we want to make sure people are clear about what is going to be on the ballot and make sure they feel motivated and clear

about getting out to vote. >> i'm a local republican volunteer. >> while democrats are walking the districts in oakland, republicans are walking those in contra costa counties. they are on the phone to make sure the republicans know the issues, candidates and get out to vote. the chair of the california republican party said republicans have been energized by the presidential debates. >> i don't know if it was just the debates or the fact it is the last month of election, but we have had a surge sense the first debate. >> becky, the chair of the contra costa republican party, says the phone banks are the tip of the get-out-to-vote effort to in the county. >> the last two weeks we've walked permanent absentee republican voters and now we are walking walk-in voters. so our emphasis is on getting out the vote. >> the department of elections wants to remind everyone that this coming tuesday, october 30th, is the last day to request vote by mail ballots. in oakland, abc7 news.

police in the south bay think they have nabbed the so-called beanie bandit accused of robbing at least six banks. they released this photo of him taken from a surveillance camera taken during one of the robberies. investigators say over the past two months this man of campbell held up banks in campbell, san jose, los gatos, san jose and sunnyvale. police say they have evidence linking him to all six robberies. >> hundreds of bay area emergency personnel are spending this weekend training for extreme emergency operations. training started yesterday morning in more than a dozen cities. in haywood crews practiced repelling down the side of a building at cal state university east bay. other exercises in the area include a mach airplane hijacking in oakland and chemical sabotage in castro valley. all the training helps officers gain individual tactical skills and it helps departments coordinate their resources. the exercises are going on

across the nation as part of homeland security training >> a new law enforcement tool in alameda county is raising fears of big brother. the tool is a drone. that drone that weighs less than four pounds has an hd camera and flies at 400 feet above ground. the drone will be used primarily to follow criminals on the run, but critics have their doubts, even if it's cheaper than a helicopter. >> the cost of a helicopter, the cost 2 to $3 million with $400 to $600 an hour in flight costs. this system, $40,000. >> we absolutely need more information. drones are subject to tremendous potential abuse, given the wealth of information they can collect, we risk proceeding into a complete surveillance state. >> the aclu is concerned residents' privacy will be compromised. they have submitted a public records act request to the sheriff.

time. san francisco likes to tout itself as a green city, but there's a renewed push for transferring the obligation to maintain the city's trees to homeowners. some of just learning about the change in policy and they are not happy about it. >> san francisco has about 100,000 street trees, most of them about 65,000, are privately maintained by property owners. some, like lisa, have decided on their own to plant trees to soften and beautify the environment. but she's opposed to a new city push that will force her neighbors to take responsibility for something that has always been outside their front door. >> i think it is an imposition for people who have inherited a tree. >> the job of tree maintenance belongs to the department of public works. but after years of budget cuts, it can't keep up with pruning trees in the public right-of-way, let alone those on the sidewalks.

but the supervisor said the decision to transfer the responsibility of 24,000 trees to homeowners is not the answer. it makes no sense for us to require property owners to take care of street trees that they may not own, they may not want, they may not know how to take care of, they may not able to afford to take care of. >> wiener unsuccessfully fought for more funding in the last budget. he said a parcel tax could now be an option. but that might be a hard sell. kate smith has already spent thousands planting trees in front of her home. >> the city does a great job of keeping the city streets beautiful, but it's part of their problem, not ours. i'm already paying taxes. >> this is the second time homeowners are being forced to pick up the bill. thousands of the trees privately maintained were forced on the homeowners back in the '90s, but at that time they could choose to take responsibility or

have them cut down. now no one will be allowed to destroy the urban forest. homeowners do not have an out. >> this is something we are reluctantly taking on. it's not what we want to do but we feel we need to unless we come up with a more sustainable funding source. >> the notices are already in the mail for about 1,000 homeowners so far. there is a process for appealing so we will see what happens on that one. we will see about the weather right here right now with our meet lisa argen. >> we've been on this two day thing where we hold the whether a couple days and then it changes. we had the nice day yesterday with 80s and today almost as nice. the sea breeze will kick up and temperatures cooling off just a little. rain is in the forecast. i'll spell it out coming up. >> r-a-i-n. >> a new technology that will keep you off

hurricane. tonight the giants will try to conclude their magical season in detroit. abc7 news reporter wayne freedman is in detroit. he ran into some giants fans who have a very personal connection to the team. >> we found them in a hotel lobby looking at old pictures of a certain favorite player who always wanted to be a giant. >> i knew he was a good athlete when he was real young. >> we always told him if you are good, everybody will know you are good so you don't go around patting yourself on the back. >> does the kid look familiar yet? >> my son is brandon belt. >> so is her son-in-law. >> he was cute when he was a little boy. >> for darryl and their inlaws, this is a world series experience that reflected glory. >> they flew into detroit, they have a room at the team hotel surrounded by the giants. but make no mistake, there's a big difference between detroit and where they come from.

>> when darryl belt says "that's my boy" he means it. all of us looked at his 24-year-old son on that stage but in his heart he still sees the one-year-old who could hit the heck out of a baseball. from detroit, abc7 news. >> here's a look at the games ahead. game four today at 5:07. if a game five is necessary, it would be tomorrow in detroit. then if a game six is needed it would happen back here in san francisco on wednesday, which also happens to be halloween. wayne freedman and sports anchor mike shumann will bring us live coverage from detroit this evening. i guess they will have to bundle up a little bit. >> certainly. and we've got rain on the way here but not for the next several days. in fact, small changes day-to-day. today those changes start with the sea breeze. view electric mount tam shows some haze out there. we've had fog but that is

confined in the coast and it's really going to stay there throughout much of the day. lots of things going on. of course, you heard about the east coast where the mayor has closed all public schools for tomorrow in a state of emergency from rhode island. that's as far north as the watches are and then the rain. the heavy rain from north carolina up through maryland, buoys off of north carolina reporting wave heights of over 30 feet. we are looking at a lot of impact here, over 50 million people with the potential of 40 to 70 mile-an-hour winds from washington, d.c., boston and pittsburgh, four to eight foot storm surge. there's a 50% chance that the storm surge around long island and staten island could be five feet, five to ten inches of rain and the high tide with the lunar full moon coming up. big problems anticipated for the next couple days, while our weather takes on its own changes. just bit by bit.

here's the fog. you notice it is right along the coast and that will be allowing for gray skies later on today from point reyes through ocean beach where we have fog right now. 57 by the delta, and down by the monterey bay we are looking at nice weather already with 58 in watsonville and salinas. so this morning some areas are a little cooler around the city, the coast. but other areas retaining some of the warmth from yesterday. that would be fremont and los gatos and even san jose pretty nice right now. a little bit of fog along the shoreline, but elsewhere staying sunny and nice and mild today with rain turning. favoring the north bay. may get wet in san francisco and parts of the east bay but not looking like it will make its way all the way into the south bay and the santa clara valley. for the trick-or-treaters, not too bad. maybe a little on the damp side. but high pressure in control today. it will slide to the east and when it does it will keep the

rainmaker to the north of us for the next couple of days. but we going to make up to the mist and drizzle as soon as tomorrow. the san mateo coast, get used to that for the next couple days. it will be pretty gray starting out. enjoy today, another day with some low 80s in sacramento. we were in the 80s in the north bay yesterday, over into the east bay with numbers well up into the 70s in oakland. today we are going to be a little bit cooler, anywhere from two to four degrees cooler. it's 68 half moon bay yesterday. today 66. the city was in the mid-70s. coming down two or three degrees with that sea breeze in the afternoon and then the fog and low clouds really will pull all the way inland tonight. 82 in gilroy, 77 in salinas. back in detroit looking good. wind is kicking up a also bit, ten to twenty miles an hour. low fog and cloud returning tonight. we are back in the 70s, but that's average for tomorrow and tuesday with partly cloudy skies, cooler conditions. and the rain by the later afternoon hours on wednesday, and then we are drying out

nicely thursday, friday and saturday. so our only chance of rain really comes halloween evening. >> okay. so then you have to put your costume up, wear a rain coat over it, lisa. >> something like that. we will deal with it to get that candy, right? a new technology developed here in the bay area could save thousands of patients from having unnecessary tests for heart disease. it could also help doctors pinpoint those with the highest risk. abc7 news health and science reporter carolyn johnson has a look. normal breaths for now. >> richard was a few strokes from the green when a strange feeling interrupted his round of golf. he knew he was uncomfortable, but the symptoms were vague. >> i got a burning sensation across my chest. it was not a pain. >> now it could be gastrointestinal, it could be their lungs or it could be a heart blockage and my job is listening to them and ferret out more selective symptoms that may pinpoint whether they have heart disease. >> the cardiologist said the

goal is to avoid running everybody through tests which are effective but also carry side effects. >> a lot of radiation. ten years of radiation you get in that procedure. >> current options includes prescreening patients with a cardio stress test, often involving a treadmill. now a bay area company believes it has an alternative that can help spot which patients are more likely suffering from heart disease more quickly. >> maybe an alcohol pad, bandaid, gauze. >> it was developed by palo alto based cardio dx. it involves a blood draw that can be done at a doctors office but what happens after that is extremely sophisticated science. >> once the blood is drawn from the patient, we bring it into our lab at palo alto and it's a three step process. >> the first step involved automated machines that extract rna from the blood cells, which is then used to synthesize a

complete dna sample. >> the final step we put it on this machine that measures the individual levels of the 23 genes in our algorithm. >> it's ultimately measuring gene expression. look for what genes are turned on when a patient's heart is -- or blood vessels are diseased and producing the plaque that blocks the arteries. it gives a strong indication whether a patient suffering from heart disease. >> with our test we can easily and quickly identify those patients where the chest pain is unlikely to be caused by a block in the coronary artery. >> he believes the blood test coupled with other screening methods, could reduce the false positives and unnecessary angiograms while giving patients who do need them a quicker diagnosis. >> if someone needs an invasive test or not or can i watch them more closely before commit to go doing a test. >> in his case it did eventually lead to an angiogram which revealed a blockage. he had a stint placed in his

artery which allowed him to return to the golf course. >> it's a small, nine hole course but we really enjoy it. >> that was health and science reporter carolyn johnson. that test runs just under $1,200 and is now covered by medicare, but private insurance still varies. >> coming up, a warning for boaters after an endangered turtle is spotted in the bay area. we will tell you where straight ahead.

>> you might want to take a close look at these winning numbers from last night's super lotto plus because one winning ticket picked all six numbers. 5, 14, 36, 38, 47. the meganumber 18. the winning ticket purchased in san francisco at the best food grocery store. wednesday night's jackpot is estimated at $7 million. boaters are being warned to keep their eyes peeled for a rare sea turtle spotted in our waters. it was seen near the berkeley marina idea morning. a group of sea turtle, conservationists went out to see if they could spot it. they believe it's an olive ridley or a green sea turtle. both are in danger. this is a rare sighting for the bay area because sea currents usually are not warm enough for the turtles to travel this far north.
